Microsoft Office 365 is the latest version of Microsoft Office’s longstanding suite of products featuring Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint software.

The main difference in this version isn’t so much the software as how Microsoft delivers it to you. Microsoft Office 365 is an online, subscription-based service (you can pay monthly or annually) rather than use a CD to load the software.

  • The key benefit: Your software is always up to date.
  • The key downside: It costs a bit more, and you have to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee rather than a one-time software purchase.
  • The key takeaway: While Office 365 does now require a subscription, its benefits and features likely outweigh the regular, and slightly higher, costs.
Features:
You can purchase Office 365 from two categories: “For Home” and “For Business.” Each includes three packages from which to choose depending on which programs you need. The prices vary depending on the package. Check them out here.

There are many advantages to Office 365. These are the most-important ones:

  • Your go-to office anywhere: You can share your 365 Office software and documents easily across devices. Office 365 uses the cloud. You can be working on your office computer, in a meeting with your phone, at home on your laptop, or out of the country on your iPad, and still access your software and saved documents; all you need is an internet connection.
  • Simple to learn and use: Office 365 is designed for large and small organizations. It’s easy to set up, connect to a VPN (virtual private network) and collaborate with others.
  • Video conferencing: Almost all of the 365 Office packages come with online meetings and video conferencing for up to 250 people.
  • Cloud storage: All but one package come with one terabyte of OneDrive storage per user.
